We heard the clicking….not of the needles but that of the crutch helping Karen come up the stairs – five of them….and then a step-down into the studio. She was greeted with a round of cheers, hugs, and kisses!

She had been absent for several weeks….she was doing the most ordinary of things…her office couch had just been cleaned…the cushions were on the floor…she turned around and the next thing she knew she was twisting her leg as she tried to prevent her fall. Yep, she tripped over the cushion. The words of wisdom here are – Be Careful! Most accidents happen in the home or home offices.

Back to Karen….she broke her tibula and was house-bound as her leg mended. She did some knitting….and the knitting group came to her a couple of weeks ago. Like many of us who have unexpected immobility problems, Karen was challenged to manage her work, her household, and her knitting. But she’s back and in full form. She was wearing one of her many knits…now she is working on a MaggiKnits stole. There will be more to say about about that as her stole “builds’….she has six or seven squares done now.

And now for those stoles on the needles…………..

The Washcloth gone Stole – In my enthusiasm to promote MaggiKnits yarns ….like she needs any help…but I did want to show her yarn in a more conservative view….I was inspired by the washcloth that Kimberly had just knit from the Fiber Trends pattern by Evelyn Clark, 215x, Bathing Beauties. So another stole was cast on. It is a very easy pattern with great results. My goal is to have it finished by June….OMG, I just realized it’s almost the middle of May. I must click those needles. Then I will move onto my last stole, which is already in progress.

…….Yarn and pattern available through Skein Lane Studio.

Point Edge Wrap – As I was sorting through my UFO’s recently I came upon this one that I started when I had the shop. In my excitement to show something else, this stole got put aside…and darn if I didn’t forget about it. Well, I do want to finish it….once again, simple lines with great results. The pattern, Point Edge Wrap, comes from Debbie Bliss’s book Cathay. The yarn that I am using is black Cathay – a blend of 50% cotton, 35% viscose microfibre, 15% silk.

……Black is no longer available but other colors and the book are available through Skein Lane Studio.

Prayer Shawl…. The prayer shawl is an inspiration from The Prayer Shawl Ministry. During the past few years I have either knit a prayer shawl or participated in the knitting of one. One of the earlier ones that several of us knit together was for Sharon – a customer, employee, and friend. Her brother Terence died on a Richmond school ground defending someone else. For Sharon’s stole we chose a hot pink cotton from Needful Yarns. (I “loved” this supplier, and, unfortunately, for us knitters, they decided to close their business.) And in 2007, we knit one in pink MaggiKnits’ linen for Lindsay who had been diagnosed with cancer.

For my version of the prayer shawl I used Noro’s Silver Thaw, a wool and mohair yarn, that is now discontinued. I must say that it was quite pricey, but such fun to knit. I knit it in memory of my mom…..and as it turns out I wore it when I officially became Catholic last year. (Kimberly wrote a lovely post on her Bead One, Pray Too blog about this.) I hadn’t thought of it until now, but I should name the stole – Martha’s Prayer Stole. The patron saint that I chose was St. Martha, my mother’s name. This is a great stole to wear – it always stays in place.

Noro  “Poncho” Stole – When this store model arrived at Skein Lane in the Fall of 2005, we all looked at it and said, “What the h….!” This stole had and still has three holes in it. And the pattern describes it as a poncho with “Make Opening for Head” instructions. Now, I usually am a quick study….as are  my customers and friends….and we just did not get it. I got on the phone with Susan at our supplier. With some consultation with her staff, she was able to tell me that the holes were armholes….and that the stole had a huge wrap on your body. You hold the stole out, slip each arm into two of the three holes and then wrap until you can slip one arm into the available hole. When it’s on, it has a lovely shepherd feel about it…even somewhat of a 70’s feel (for those of you who might have been around then). The pattern is featured in  Noro Vol.18, Y-749. I love this shawl but have to be in the right mood to be wrapped in so much fabric. Maybe, I would wear it more if it snowed here.

….. Noro’s Silver Thaw has been discontinued.

Our feet are finally back on the ground after Stitches West and MaggiKnits. It was a wonderful trade show….lots of knitting enthusiam….and great to see so many old acquaintances and friends. Maggie and Julie. who came from the UK to help Maggi, were their creative best helping customers making decisions about garment and color choices.

Maggi Knits Team and customers

My staff and I helped our customers walk away happy. Many thanks to Sundee, Jan, Merle, and Debbie for all their help!  It was a great weekend. And since then many of us have been knitting Maggi designs. A MaggiKnits knitalong starts on May 2. Check our website www.skeinlane.com for the details.

Other exciting MaggiKnit news is that I spent time talking with Pat (and Sharon) from Neighbor Knit Shop in Hendersonville, TN while they were on their way to Stitches South in Atlanta. They were meeting up with Maggi for another weekend of retailing fun. We were both quite excited about the endless possibilities of knitting with Maggi’s yarns. In fact, Pat mentioned that one of her customers is using MaggiKnit’s linen to knit The Classic Shirt from Mother-Daughter Knits by Sally Melville & Caddy Melville Ledbetter.

Stay tuned for our soon-to-come MaggiKnits garments and tips page to be featured at www.skeinlane.com

Today has been a very active day sorting through all the various cyperspace connections – blogs, Skein Lane Studio, Raverly, and Facebook. Was able to post something to each site….and in turn heard back from many “Skein Laners” – what a wonderful community. And the knitting excitement re:Stitches continues to grow. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of Maggi’s yarns for the event….I will try to keep my knitting needles out of the yarn until Stitches is over.

Hello world!

I have been thinking about this blog for some time…have been kind of blogging through my website www.skeinlane.com and through my Skein Lane Studio newsletters. So, rather than think anymore I am just going to embark and refine this as I go. Exciting news for Skein Lane Studio – we will have a presence at Stitches West in Santa Clara. You will find us in MaggiKnits booth #728….Maggi will show her fashions and wonderful yarns, share her design ideas, help you select your yarn and project, be there to sign your books – and we will be your retailer on hand to supply you with those wonderful MaggiKnits yarns and patterns. Mark your calendar for February 26, 27, 28, and March 1. It will be a lot of fun and hope to see you there.
