Posts Tagged ‘Friday Knitting Workshop’

’tis the season to share….and there is much to share given that there are many postings in the Skein Lane lineup. I asked Jan for some details on what she literally just finished at this past Friday morning knitting group.  Jan says….

  • Pattern: Verybusymonkey (all her stuff can be found on Ravelry, bought via download) – “Irish Moss Shawl.”
  • Fiber:  a Blue Moon (Fiber Arts) yarn that I found at the show in San Mateo – Marine Silk Fingering.  100 grms/3.5 oz/487 yards.  The colorway is Sky Blue Pink, and you really do get a shimmer of pink through the yarn as light reflects from it.
  • Content: 51% silk, 29% merino, and 20% sea cell rayon.
  • Gauge: 28-32 sts per 4 inches on size 1-3 needles.
  • Washing instructions: hand wash or dry clean.

“The pattern version used a 435 yd skein of yarn and therefore my skein of 487 yds should have been sufficient, but it wasn’t.  Most likely my gauge was the culprit.  In any case, the pattern fortunately suggests where to bind off if you’d like the shawl to be shorter n the back or if you’re short on yarn.  I thought it might be obvious that I cut it off 4 rows early, but it’s not. The dark purple shawl that I did before this one is also a Verybusymonkey pattern.  I LOVE her stuff!”

A couple footnotes from Carolyn here: I did take a couple more photos of Jan modeling her beautiful shawl….but they are nowhere to be found….better hire a new photographer. I just checked out the Verybusymonkey site…..on my….there are many beautiful shawl patterns!

During this past month of December we saw some beautiful garments at the Friday Knitting Workshop Group.  Janie was wearing her “Jeweled Mini-Poncho“….Bonnie was wearing the “Daybreak scarf/stole“…Kimberly donned a couple hats (hats will be posted on their own). We’ve seen Sarah in her “Santa Hat“.   Sheri showed her recently finished fingerless gloves “Pluviose“…I have been inspired to knit these for my sister Betty. She’s seen the pattern and knows they are coming. Finished one today. I might be able to deliver by Thursday when I meet up with her.

Connie finished and showed two lovely baby sweaters inspired by the Surprise Sweater pattern that comes to us from Elizabeth Zimmerman. Just today Kimberly posted that she is embarking on this garter pattern…what’s unusual about this is that she does not love the garter pattern…ironically, I too, am embarking on that same pattern. Bill’s granddaughter is having her first born at the end of the month…so I better get “cracking” with getting this sweater done. Oh….knit, garter, knit, garter…I will be done!!

Jan has been seen wearing her Summer Flies Shawl.  That too will be a separate posting….several other folks have knit this beautiful shawl including myself and I forgot to post…what the heck?! This lovely shawl was brought to our attention by none other than Kimberly.

So…let’s enjoy…there is so much to share!

The Friday group came together with its usual high energy…the needles were clicking and the travelers were sharing about their recent travels. Hawaii for Kimberly….Jan was gone for a couple of weeks and her travels took her to Canada and then some. I actually couldn’t keep up with her….her travels were while I was  gaining new vision. And what was on the needles….some shawls, vests, socks and on Jean’s needles – the “Beekeeper’s Quilt”. I will whip out the camera next week and share photos of their creations.

"Boys Crown" from Maurie's needles

The Saturday group also came with high energy. Some were returning from being absent from their knitting needles and another changed her group to Sat am.  Our group ranged in age from 9 to 97….I mention it only because it is wonderful to see young Rohan knitting with the more seasoned knitters….and quite comfortable at that. I was handy with the camera this morning….captured some projects….and some knitters. Here we go!

Posting today was a little fussy! The pictures didn’t want to set up right…so called it a day around 5pm and came back to it just now. There are a couple more photos from Friday that I want to share. Patricia has been knitting on felted slippers but this Friday she returned to her scarf. She will be sending the info (yarn and pattern stats) shortly. In the meantime, here are the photos. Be sure to click through on the photos so you can see a full shot…particularly the one of Patricia.

Jean was wearing a window-pane patterned vest that she made some time ago. She is describing the “steek” for us.

The next photo is me in a non-knit…but wearing a Christmas gift from my nieice and it got rave reviews from the Friday group. Thanks a bunch.

And I am excited to report that I have completed two projects this past week…a basic black scarf for 15-year old nephew Dan and a slouch hat for soon-to-be 12 yr old Sam. The photos will follow in the next few days! Yeah…I can hardly wait to pick up the needles of another UFO.

OMG….I don’t know any other way to start! Each of the Skein Lane knitting workshop groups are wonderful and unique…. each have their own distinct personality. Today’s OMG came from me…caused by one of the Friday workshop knitters. Where do I begin? Well, the first is that 3 or 4 of that group have taken on physical health in a major way. They go to Ice Chamber here in El Cerrito…and three of them are featured on Ice Chamber’s blog today. And why? Because they are looking great! I’m secretly, and now not so secretly, quite envious.  What an inspiration to all of us. And the OMG with my loud laugh erupted with Jean’s email…”Looking GOOD!!  And….they knit too!”  And from Merle, “you gals ROCK!”

Our knitting workshops have a lot of fun and each one has its own distinct personality. Each group celebrates the holidays – the Friday Group celebrates the entire month of December….okay, they/we start with Thanksgiving weekend.  We knit, we lunch, we knit.  The finale luncheon is at Skates on the Bay in Berkeley. These photo shots are from 2007. (You can double click on the photo to enlarge for better viewing.)
