My family of nieces and nephews spans several years….as many families do. My 1st generation nieces and nephews ( eight of them) range in age from 45 to almost 2….yep, two families here! The 2nd generation (five of them) range in age from 19 to 13. This post is about one of my 1st generation nieces….Jade who recently celebrated her 8th birthday .

Jade Feb 2012 - A star!

Jade, her sisters, and their father visited me from Idaho last summer. Just have to say the girls were wearing their twirly skirts upon arrival. They were charming….no bias on my part….. and demurely shy about expressing their wants and likes, etc…..but they warmed up and did. Jade saw a felted hat that I had hanging by the front door mirror…she loved it. Guess what she got for her birthday last week? (I kept my hat but she got one like it!)

The truth of the matter is that I actually did not knit or felt this one…..Helen of our Skein Lane knitting circle knit and felted the one that I have (Noro Yarn). She heard my story about how much Jade loved my hat…and Helen being such a generous person knit and felted one before I knew what “hit”. It was for Jade…I saved it for her birthday. (Helen and I did a little barter…class for hat kind of thing).

Isn’t my niece full of wonderful drama? I love her spirit!

The other day Bill and I were lazing around…it was a holiday and we watched some afternoon TV …he noticed that Knitting Daily was on . We watched it….and as it ended the tag line was “Make time for yarn every day!”.

He said, “No worries here. She’s on it!” Where upon I fell out laughing and picked up my yarn!

Handy Notions

Snap Rings and O rings

We stitchers are so often in need of stitch markers ….they can be found most often in knitting shops. However,  knitter and long-time friend Kevin was recently at the local hardware store on a plumbing  mission …he stopped short when he saw o-rings and snap rings….how about knitting markers?!

What a great idea and the price is right. I think I’ll be shopping for these “new” stitch markers while looking for tack nails to fix the weather stripping that the boy cats have decided to pull back from the floor by the back door. What were they thinking? Early spring maybe.

Anyway, I am  adding a page to this blog…all about resources… this post is the first addition. Stay tuned as I link resources from the Skein Lane website and from other sites. There is so much out there to share to enhance our skills.

Great-great grandma Miles (1845 - 1929)

I was working on family history this evening and read again…

……..”Mary did all the sewing and knitting for the family and in those days most all the clothing had to be homemade.”

Mary was my grandma’s grandmother “Grandma Miles”. My grandma’s photo of her grandmother Miles use to hang over her bed. It has been in my home for some 25 years now….it was willed to me because I asked for it when I was 16. I love this photo and of course feel a kindred spirit for Grandma Miles….a fellow knitter.

On Christmas Eve thirty-five of us gathered at the home of my niece’s brother-in-law Bill and his family. As often happens when it was time to gather at the two tables for our sit-down meal we grouped in usual family groups….our immediate group was niece Honara and husband Scott with two of their children….Betsy and Daniel; Scott’s parents Pat and Don; Scott’s sister Stephanie and husband Kevin with their two adult boys…Kyle and Kris. We dined, we wined and we talked. We got to hear about Kyle’s work and training  in the investment world of New York and delighted in the news that he is moving to San Francisco soon….Kris talked to us both in Russian and English about his 6 months of schooling in St Petersburg….Daniel shared his plans for college applications….and Betsy talked about some of her experiences at Fresno State.

Then we moved on to the big stuff….”tats” as we hear it said. Betsy is telling us about wanting a tattoo….we are all trying to convince her not to…but if she does be discreet! Just a few days ago she added a jewel to her nose….I must say it is discreet and attractive. We are all giving Bets lots of advice and then the conversation takes a turn….Kevin is really laughing as he says, “Why Carolyn I would have thought you would have a tat of knitting needles right over your heart!” We were off the chair laughing!

..hmmmm, should I?

A close up of the cut and fix....can you see it?

A close up of the cut and fix....can you see it?

Marsha is persistent in solving problems - and this was one of the best!
Marsha is persistent in solving problems – and this was one of the best!

About 4 weeks ago prolific knitter, Marsha, came to Saturday morning Skein Lane knitting workshop, and she was so happy. She was almost through with a sweater knit with Berroco’s Pure Merino and the pattern was from MJ2B (I think)…a wonderful pattern with a cable yoke. I, in fact, had been wanting to knit this one for a long time. Well…the group was all excited for her. The next Saturday Marsha arrived full of dismay. While she was weaving in loose ends one of them became undone…with the help of the cats…and she had a huge whole in front…like 1 1/2 inches. She left it with me…and I can usually mend anything to perfection…but not this time. So, the following weekend we embarked on an adventure. We cut off the bottom of the sweater with the idea in mind that she would knit the bottom again and then graft it to the top. All the while I had nagging thoughts about stitches not being knit in the same direction and thus being 1/2 stitch off while grafting. Well, after we cut I was picking out and unknitting the knit fabric on the top above the cut. Now, this pattern was an 8 x 5 rib…..and imagine my surprise when I realized I was unknitting the stockinette and picking out the purls. It was a knitting miracle! Marsha knit the sweater back down from the cut to the bottom and the 1/2 stitch off issue rolled into the purl part of the rib. Marsha wore the sweater yesterday and only knitters who know the story would know and, even then, they had to really look. It was really a miracle! Check it out. Oh, and she is knitting a cowl from the cut-off bottom! I am still excited about the solution. And tonight Marsha writes, “I still can’t believe the knitting miracle!”

Our feet are finally back on the ground after Stitches West and MaggiKnits. It was a wonderful trade show….lots of knitting enthusiam….and great to see so many old acquaintances and friends. Maggie and Julie. who came from the UK to help Maggi, were their creative best helping customers making decisions about garment and color choices.

Maggi Knits Team and customers

My staff and I helped our customers walk away happy. Many thanks to Sundee, Jan, Merle, and Debbie for all their help!  It was a great weekend. And since then many of us have been knitting Maggi designs. A MaggiKnits knitalong starts on May 2. Check our website www.skeinlane.com for the details.

Other exciting MaggiKnit news is that I spent time talking with Pat (and Sharon) from Neighbor Knit Shop in Hendersonville, TN while they were on their way to Stitches South in Atlanta. They were meeting up with Maggi for another weekend of retailing fun. We were both quite excited about the endless possibilities of knitting with Maggi’s yarns. In fact, Pat mentioned that one of her customers is using MaggiKnit’s linen to knit The Classic Shirt from Mother-Daughter Knits by Sally Melville & Caddy Melville Ledbetter.

Stay tuned for our soon-to-come MaggiKnits garments and tips page to be featured at www.skeinlane.com
