A baby has arrived!

Natasha’s mother sent this exciting news flash…….

“Natasha and John’s baby was born this afternoon at 2:45 p.m.  He was 7 lbs 9 oz, 20 inches long.  He has black hair and dark eyes.  When I left the hospital this evening, he still didn’t  have a name.”

It seems that we just had the baby shower and I am still posting photos from that wonderful event.

Another Mason-Dixon inspiration

Another Mason-Dixon inspiration

Oh where, oh where have the last two weeks gone?! You all have been knitting…I’ve been taking photos of wonderful items….there’s much more to share.

I’m thinking part of the two weeks has been caught up with my “animal farm” and pup, Lucy, needs lots of exercise…in fact, we are leaving right now for Pt Isabel. But before we leave let me share Diane’s latest.

It’s been 11/2 years now that Diane has embarked on a new path….a single person regrouping buying a home…decorating it…and one of her dreams was to knit a Mason-Dixon inspired bathroom rug. It’s garter…that’s not tough…but she knit this with 3 strands of Sugar and Spice – a cotton yarn that is a great price with great results – and it really racked havoc on her hands and shoulders. She has knit many things during this last year plus…and now the rug is done. Hurray!

More coming tomorrow! Enjoy!….oh, Lucy is calling now….we’re off!

And now some photos from the shower. Nina’s granddaughter, 7-yr old Kinsey, was quite eager to help Natasha open her presents. It truly was a wonderful morning of celebration.

The Moderne Blanket – I loved doing this one for my youngest sister’s youngest baby. There is a beautiful picture of all three of her girls cuddled under this blanket….and I will post that photo later.

The Joseph’s Blankie of Many Colors – I started this blanket with my living room in mind…and then I received a lovely gift from my friend celebrating our 50 years of friendship. I’d like to think friends since the womb, thus making me much younger than I am…but it was in grammar school on the Plains of Eastern Colorado that our paths crossed. I was so moved by her gift that I thought she should have this log cabin blanket. I pulled it out of its UFO spot, finished it and sent it on. Recently Mary told me that her husband (we all went to high school together) was bragging to some of his co-workers about it…and you know that glaze that sometimes comes over a non-knitter’s eyes…well Charlie experienced it! Sure made my heart happy that Charlie likes the blanket as well as Mary.

Peg and "Joseph's Blanket of Many Colors"

Peg and "Joseph's Blanket of Many Colors"

Peg had a lot fun knitting this blanket, another Log Cabin version from Mason-Dixon Knitting,  as a baby gift. It’s great how she offset the lights and darks…and she was able to use a lot of yarns from her personal stash.

Tomorrow I’ll share the one I did that was going to be for me…and then it became a gift for a life-long friend.

Nina and her granddaughter and Moderne Baby Blanket

Nina and her granddaughter and Moderne Baby Blanket

The book Mason-Dixon Knitting by Kay Gardiner and Ann Meador Shayne (friends and business partners because of the internet) was released in 2006 and has been the inspiration for many log cabin blankets to be knit. I have knit two – one for my youngest sister’s child and one for my lifelong friend Mary…friends since we were 12. And I have participated in many as we Skein Lane knitters have knit for the arrival of new babies within the groups.  The joy and beauty of all them is that even though the design is simple, each one looks different. It’s all about fibers and colors. So, let’s take a look at few of them over the next few days. The most recent completion is one that Nina knit using Sugar ‘n Cream yarn…one of the cheaper and great cotton yarns. She edged the blanket with stockinette which rolls back over the body. This edge is different than the design from Mason-Dixon…and all the better..it’s about being inspired by books and patterns that we see. And then we can take off!

The Travelers

Those of us in the Friday knitting group have our own personal travel guides, Kimberly and Jan. Kimberly is a journalist by trade as well as a prolific knitter. She is traveling with her husband, Terry, in Italy and she has much to share…which she is doing by sending photos as well as posting to her blogs.

Jan and her husband, Steve, are on a cruise which started in Washington, D.C. and arriving in Venice for the start of their European travels. We’ve heard before they departed from DC….but are eagerly awaiting more travel news.

Both Kimberly and Jan have both discovered yarn shops during their travels.

…Coming next: more Friday morning news…and then Tuesday…and then Saturday.

We heard the clicking….not of the needles but that of the crutch helping Karen come up the stairs – five of them….and then a step-down into the studio. She was greeted with a round of cheers, hugs, and kisses!

She had been absent for several weeks….she was doing the most ordinary of things…her office couch had just been cleaned…the cushions were on the floor…she turned around and the next thing she knew she was twisting her leg as she tried to prevent her fall. Yep, she tripped over the cushion. The words of wisdom here are – Be Careful! Most accidents happen in the home or home offices.

Back to Karen….she broke her tibula and was house-bound as her leg mended. She did some knitting….and the knitting group came to her a couple of weeks ago. Like many of us who have unexpected immobility problems, Karen was challenged to manage her work, her household, and her knitting. But she’s back and in full form. She was wearing one of her many knits…now she is working on a MaggiKnits stole. There will be more to say about about that as her stole “builds’….she has six or seven squares done now.

Coming next: More Friday knitting workshop tales!
