Susanne’s Stash

Susanne in shrug

We, the Saturday knitters, are getting ready for our annual ’tis the Season’ brunch and along with that we are having a “white elephant gift swap”. We’ve decided it is a gift of one skein/ball (or equivalent) of yarn from our personal yarn stashes. Susanne began her “search”.

“So the search is on to find something to share. Holy Crap! I am starting sweat at my stash. Where to start! I can’t process it all!! Going to take dogs for walk and avoid for now. Love to you all!” Susanne

Some thoughts came back from Susanne’s email.

….from Diane – “Yes, I’d say you have a bit of a dilemma there!”

….from Katie – “Especially since they’re all upside down. How do you read the labels, by standing on your head?” 😮 Note: the photos came in upside down…easily remedied!

….from Janie – “Holy crap is right! Can’t wait to see what you bring us Susanne. (In all honesty, my stash is just about as frightening.) This ought to be a FUN yarn exchange! Can’t wait.” Janie xo

….me (Carolyn) – I decline to comment as I am over the top with my stash! Well…it looks like I just did comment!

Last words from Susanne for the moment on the stash topic!

Carolyn,  you can blog about my stash, if you turn the pictures right side up! There is still more yarn, all the ribbon in a bag for a shawl project and several “on the needles” project…. Confessions of a knitter!!

Love to ya,

Susanne

Saturday Morning #2

The other “end” of the table – Saturday Morning.

Our Saturday knitting workshop has so many wonderful things to share….knitting, stories….support (Katie just lost her uncle)….and amidst it all – laughter! I am way behind in sharing the creativity but today I am sharing  some of the latest of this group. We always knit when we come together on Saturday mornings….but sometimes we don’t get the “show and tell” of our knitting done…we are too busy settling “state of affairs”. This past week we brought our “show and tell” back to the surface!

Here’s what is on some of our needles along with some quotes.

99 Garters Rows on "the wall"!

99 Garters Rows on “the wall”!

I think the favorite of the day when Susanne reminded of us “99 bottles of beer on the wall” as she began singing “99 rows garter stitch to go”! She is on the last block of the  “Moderne Log Cabin Blanket (pattern can be found on page 78 of Mason Dixon Knitting). This pattern has been ever popular in this Saturday morning circle..I have knit a couple and I think Susanne is completing her third one…I know Diane has knit one or two. This particular rendition from Susanne is a wedding gift for her son.

Marsha - knitting Marty's Afghan pattern!

There were a couple more blankets/afghans at the table. Marsha is knitting “Marty’s afghan” in Lorna’s Laces Shephard Worsted. It is her comfort knitting…the kind that she does when she just needs quiet space.

Terry is weaving in the ends of her recently completed baby gift afghan!

This is Terry's 7th or 8th Heart Inspired Afghan...in this case the baby is due in two weeks!

There’s more! Maurie is finishing up a hat….Janie is knitting a cowl….Katie is finishing up a diagonal scarf. Each of the fibers used on these projects catches the eye! I showed a “learning” which I will post separately. Other projects were shared but we didn’t get close ups of  Diane’s latest project or Carol’s bolero or Ann’s socks. More will be revealed as Diane likes to say. Also, Shari sent a photo or two of her recently completed Scottish socks…which I will also post separately and hopefully along with some dance photos that are in my archives.

Maurie is really much happier with this hat than she looks...Susanne is going to "gifted" with this.

Katie...the scarf is almost done! It's going to be long enough for a double wrap!

This group will be celebrating “tis the Season” with its annual brunch on Dec 15!

Bonnie and KimberlyCheck out Jean’s photo collection of the Friday ’tis the Season celebration. We did have so much fun! Some of us even knit a bit!

Today was the day for Friday Morning Knitting Group to celebrate the season. We knit this morning…shared stories both sad and happy….one of us got a make-up job (lucky me)….we do many things while knit.

We’ve been celebrating friendship and the season for so many years that I’ve forgotten. It is our love of knitting that brought us together and it is the love of the friendships and knitting that weave us together. There were 14 of us at Cugini’s in Albany for our annual “tis the season” luncheon celebration. We wish that Ellen and Merle could have been there…but they sent love and greetings. You would think we would run out of things to say….but rarely is there a quiet moment. After we dined we had one of the best white elephant gift exchanges…we’ve stepped it up a notch in that we really don’t want a bad gift….just to share those things that another might enjoy more than we do! One of the hot items of the day was Vogue Knitting Stitchionary 2 – Cables. It got “stolen” two or three times. There was lots of yarn, a lovely wallet, gift certificate for a manicure, jam, a decorative bag, a lovely bead item which I named a knitting rosary…Jean did not want to give that up…I had to help her display it. Luckily, she was able to keep it.

Now….a photo gallery of the joy at our celebration. Tis the season!

Marsha and granddaughter Nov 2012Marsha has just returned from a trip to visit with her daughter and family. Her granddaughter picked up knitting. Here’s the story from Marsha.

“Rachel was very determined. She couldn’t put her needles down even for turkey! She had a meltdown after we left and was upset with her mother who couldn’t fix her mistakes like Grandma. She insisted that her Mom should send it to Grandma who could fix it and send it backMarsha's Granddaughter.”

Hey everyone…trying another way of posting here…not sure what I am doing but I am “pressing” this.
Come to Kimberly and Janie’s Boutique Gift Sale on Sat, Dec 1, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. I find some of my best presents here…okay a lot of the presents are for me!!

’tis the season…..

Are you looking for just that special gift….come see what Kimberly and Janie have to offer at their Boutique Holiday Gift Sale being hosted at Skein Lane Studio on Saturday, December 1 from 1 – 4 p.m.

I was there!

Oh what to do today? That was my question to self this past Sunday.

Truth be known there was a definitely a part of me that wanted to stay home and garden….but I chose to drive to Santa Clara to see my brother-in-law who is just two days past open-heart surgery. With some thought and inspiration from some of our Friday Morning Knitting folks I also included a stop at the 2nd Interweave Knitting Conference in San Mateo. Kimberly, Bonnie, Jan and Sheri had been there on Friday afternoon… you can read  about their visit on Kimberly’s blog.

Here’s my take! First off…it’s amazing what can be accomplished in my one-hour walkabout….new connections/old connections ….  think it was a great venue for a small showing of some 30 booths of creative artists and vendors.  First in the door that I saw was Tina from KnitWhits. We’ve known each for a long time…she use to paint needlepoint designs and I purchased some for Skein Lane when it was a store front.

Marianne, customer and Joan.

I then moved around the first corner and almost immediately saw my friend Marianne from Yarn Boutique in Lafayette…she says, ” I thought I saw you come around the corner and I think we still need to plan that dinner date.” As it turns out…..Joan Fish, a yarn rep, was helping Marianne out this weekend….and guess what? Joan and I have been trying to get together all year. Whoohoo! The three of us are getting together at the end of November.

I moved on to look at several booths…”found” Maia Discoe  of Tactile Fiber Arts…..fun to see Maia…I remember when she first came to Skein Lane retail store several years ago.  She has the best yarn…but I couldn’t buy any more of her beautiful yarn today. I am still needing to knit what I bought from her earlier this year. However, I did buy a book Coastal Knits by Alana Dakos and Hannah Fettig. Check out this link re: Maia’s yarn is featured for the Rustling Leaves Beret, page 59.

I continued with my walkabout which included stopping and chatting with Kira of Kira K Designs, Lyn of Cabin Fever (just that day merged with Sheldridge Farm), the folks at Monarch Knitting, and the lovely owner of Lavertera Rose…..we spoke of teaching and how she wants to learn to teach…we talked about how we should connect to make that happen. Kira was excited about some of her newest designs and she has some upcoming classes that she will be teaching in Albany at K2Tog.

Monarch Knitting folks were so helpful…I saw several designs that pleased my heart…and the next thing I know the young woman at computer/register was writing down the info. One was a sweater design..Metro from twistcollective..that I really, really liked…..simple but yet had some of that detail that belongs with a great knitter. Oh…there was another design that I liked…Rockefeller from West Knits.

Lyn Gemmell – Cabin Fever

Now let’s talk about Cabin Fever. Lynda Gemmell’s  sister Deb Gemmell and Robin Hunter have just released a new top-down sweater book Need A Plus Cardigan? It’s audience is that of the full figure person ….. this design book takes into account that while some bodies are fuller that doesn’t mean that the shoulders. Lyn encouraged me to use this book for one my Skein Lane workshops…stay tuned for more info.

We all know that I don’t need one more project…but now there is one more. I fell in love with the Sheldridge FarmKnit Kit – Petals Scarf.

Sheldridge Farm – Petals Scarf

I know..I know…click, click will I ever get done?!

It was a great one-hour tour in the wonderful world of knitting.

Coming up next….a look at some of the beautiful designs featured at Cabin Fever.

Just before I headed off on a week’s vacation, I had knitting “startitis”….most of you know I have more than a few projects in the works but I was overcome with the need to start a new one…a shawl type poncho knit with MaggiKnits Linen in purple. Here’s a preview of the beginning of this project that I have not been able to pick up during this vacation. It’s been in the high 80’s as well as I am having too much fun being a tourist and visiting with my cousins.

Yesterday we – Dana, Amy, Anne, and I – greeted sunrise with a hike up Makapu’u TrailIt was breathtaking both for its beauty and my high anxiety….I did make it to the top but it was with coaching from cousins Dana and Amy. Anne waited for us at a mid-way point.

Oh…..I awoke to the lovely sound of the rain….almost a welcome relief to the heat.  Just maybe those needles will start clicking today! If not today, tomorrow on the plane trip home!   Looks like tomorrow….I see the blue sky moving in! We wrap our vacation up this evening with the traditional Lu’au.

Aloha!
